Double Rescue on Lugnaquilla (15/12/12)

At 12:00pm today, December 15th, the Glen of Imaal Red Cross Mountain Rescue Team and the Dublin & Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team were requested by An Garda Síochána to come to the aid of a male hill walker who had sustained a leg injury while descending from Lugnaquilla.

The man who was with 2 other friends, was descending when the injury occurred. He continued on with the help of his friends, but due to the pain of the injury they decided to call Mountain Rescue. The party of three where located using SARLOC, a computer program used by Mountain Rescue, to use the man’s smart phone to identify his location.

The man was met by members of both teams, who assessed and treated his injury. He was then packaged and winched to Rescue 116, the Irish Coastguard helicopter which had been tasked to the incident.

As the teams where finishing with this incident they also engaged in a second rescue in the same area of Lugnaquilla. A young girl had sustained a similar injury. She was assessed and treated for her injuries before being stretched off the mountain to a waiting 4 wheel drive vehicle.

Mountain Rescue would like to thank all those involved in both successful rescues including An Garda Síochána, The Irish Coastguard & Wicklow Mountains National Park.
