Call Out 02: Lugnaquillia Rescue 16/01/16

At approximately 15.40hrs on Saturday the 16th of January both the Glen of Imaal Red Cross Mountain Rescue Team and the Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team were tasked by An Garda Siochanna to come to the aid of a Hillwalker suffering from hypothermia, near the Summit of Lugnaquillia. The Hillwalker who became unwell was with friends who raised the alarm and started the process of looking after him until help came.

A member of Mountain Rescue was descending the Mountain in the other direction when the call came in and was able to turn around and return to the summit before making his way to the casualty. Visibility was poor but the Mountain Rescue member was able to join up with the group quickly, by requesting they use whistle blasts. After an initial assessment and once the casualty was placed in a blizzard vest it was decided to keep him moving as he was able to walk with assistance. A Mountain Rescue hill party eventually met with the group above the Fraughan Rock glen and assisted in helping the man down to safety. By the time he arrived at Rescue Base in Baravore he was in good spirits. The operation was stood down at 18.57hrs.

Mountain Rescue would like to thank all agencies involved and would also like to thank the man’s companions who did an outstanding job in helping their friend on the night.
