Joining the team

Recruitment

2009 recruitment has now closed!

The Team recruits every two years or so depending on our needs. We advertise recruitment drives in local papers walking/mountaineering journals and on this website.

Aspirant members are asked to complete an application form and if deemed suitable will subsequently be asked to attend a “hill night”. A hill night is basically a night navigation exercise where all aspirant members will be asked to lead a party. This will assess competence in navigation in poor light and usually poor weather conditions it also gives us an opportunity to get to know you individually. Successful applicants will be invited to join; others may be deferred till a later time while building up more experience in the meantime.

The most recent recruitment drive was in Spring '09, applicants will be notified by email if they are successful at reaching the next level of recruitment.

If you are interested in joining the Team please make sure you are aware of the prerequisites and match them.

Prerequisites for joining

All aspirant members must hold;

  • A Mountain Skills award (equivalent competency may be accepted) as administered by Bord Oiliunt Sleibhte, the Irish Mountain Training Board. This is to ensure that all members are personally competent in navigation and proficient at looking after themselves on the hill. For more information on the award contact www.mountaineering.ie

As a Red Cross unit all new members will have to be trained in our system and will undergo a Red Cross occupational first aid course. However we do require aspirant members to have a basic understanding of first aid.

In addition, we require that new members,

  • Have a competence and comfort for working on steep ground (not necessarily crag).
  • Live in Co Wicklow or on the border areas of Kildare or Dublin. This is to ensure effective response times. Preference will be given to those living within a 20km radius of Glendalough.

How you can help

All team members give their time on a voluntary basis, and we rely on the generosity of the public for our operations. To make a donation from any bank just use back account number 59244771, sort code 90-65-07. Our registered charity number is CHY.3950.

Pager Appeal

To alert as many members as possible at the beginning of an incident the team uses the Eirpage paging system as well as mobile phone texting. While mobile phone coverage is excellent in urban and most rural areas, we are still dependant on pagers in the remote mountainous areas to get that important message through. Unfortunately, because of the reduced use of paging in the comercial world, paging receivers are becoming expensive and hard to get. The Team is in urgent need for your unused Motorola MemoExpress Pagers. If you have any sitting around in office drawers etc. they may be of use to us. Please contact the Communications Officer at noledaly@gmail.com  if you would like to donate them to the team.
