Call Out 51: Lugnaquilla Rescue 04/09/15

At approximately 12.00hrs on Friday the 4th of September  both the Glen of Imaal Red Cross Mountain Rescue Team and the Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team were tasked by An Garda Siochann to come to the aid of a hillwalker, in his early 60’s, who had fallen and suffered an injury while descending Lugnaquilla.

Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue 116 was also tasked to the scene. Due to poor visibility on the summit Rescue 116 was unable to fly in to where the casuality was but was able to airlift two MR hill parties high onto the slopes of Lugnaquilla. The hill parties then made their way to the injured man and once they had him treated and packaged in a stretcher they carried him back down to where visibility on the mountain was clear. He was then airlifted onto Rescue 116 and transported to hospital for definitive care.

MR personnel then descended back down the mountain in the company of the man’s dog who had been by his side until his master was airlifted to hospital.

Mountain Rescue would like to thank all agencies involved including: Irish Coast Guard, Wicklow Mountains National Park Staff and the South Eastern Mountain Rescue Association
